Daily Thought for 07-18-2026

How are we to love the Lord Jesus with all our hearts, souls, and minds? We are a fallen race. We fell far from our original state; one where we, in Adam, shared a completely open relationship with God, uninhibited by sinful thoughts or held back by sinful ways. There were no barriers between God and man, and in Adam was a love and appreciation for God unmatched since the Garden.

Because of all that Jesus has done for us, we really do desire to love Him, and be obedient to Him. But since we are stained with sin, and since the relationship once shared in the Garden has been broken, how can we love Him like we should?

Sadly, when sin entered the world, our ability to see the Lord in His perfection was lost. We could no longer look upon Him in His righteousness and holiness. Much was lost when man fell, not the least of which was an ability to fully comprehend who Jesus is, and all He has done for us.

Isaiah reminds us that the very best we have in ourselves is compared to filthy rags. We can try to live pure and holy lives, but our own efforts are nothing but self-righteousness, which is condemned as unholy.

Obviously, the first step to discovering who Jesus really is, and in having a proper heart towards Him is in getting saved. Before we are saved, our spirits are dead, and it is impossible for us to comprehend spiritual things. In our lost condition, we can never fully grasp the love of Christ, neither can we really know Him.

Salvation makes our spirits come alive. With our sins forgiven and the Holy Spirit indwelling us, we for the first time can discover Jesus’ true identity. However, getting saved is not enough in itself to give us a full comprehension of our Lord.

There is a passage in Romans that gives at least a hint as to how we go from getting saved, to loving the Lord Jesus with all of our hearts. It says in…

Romans 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead
:

Once we got saved, we gained access to the Spirit of power, the ‘spirit of holiness,’ described here. The more we yield our hearts and wills to the Spirit’s control, the more we are able to see according to that power.

The way we can love the Lord Jesus more, and truly understand more of His nature, is by being filled with His Spirit.

Let’s purpose to love the Lord more, as His love for us is indescribable.
